Carla Bley Motion

More than any other musican Carla Bley’s biggest influence on jazz has been her work as composer. She put it this simply: I want to give all those wonderful musicians nice music that they can play. Apart from her own band she also wrote for Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra and Gary Burton.

After examining John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock’s Blue Note compositions the Motion project has chosen to approach the music of Carla Bley. Her works span more than fourty years, and we have selected a number of great pieces, including as of yet unreleased ones like her great arrangement of “La Paloma”. More than before the compositions have been adapted to a smaller ensemble.
